LIAN pharmacy in THE UK

TCM granules and raw herbs are legally classified as either foods or medicines in the UK, depending on the substance. Identity, quality and purity of the raw materials must be proven through analyis carried out by the importer. The purity analyses are carried out by LIAN in recognized contract laboratories. Even if EU GMP test certificates are available, an identity analysis must also be carried out by the pharmacy. LIAN performs these identity analyses in our in-house laboratory using high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC). Near infrared spectroscopy (NIR), a method frequently used in the food and agricultural industries, is no longer accepted by the respective authorities. LIAN, as an importer, posesses a licence for the import, export and wholesale trade as well as a GMP certificate for the production and analysis of TCM medicines. LIAN has a pharmacy license for our production site in Landgraaf (NL), from which the ordered formulas are shipped on the same day.
The costs for Chinese herbal medicine are partly covered by some private insurance plans and reimbursed by some employer health schemes in the UK. The authority responsible for medicines is the MHRA (Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency), and for food, it's the FSA (Food Standards Agency).
At LIAN we are keeping up to date with legislative changes as a result of the UK leaving the European union. We consult with legal experts in the field of herbal medicine to make sure that we are operating in accordance with all relevant legislation.

CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE in THE UK

Traditional Chinese medicine is practiced in the UK by therapists and physicians. The regulation of TCM in the UK for therapists is done on a voluntary basis. Therapists can join one of many professional associations who make sure that their members are adequately trained and abide by a professional code of conduct. Some of these organisations are also involved in organising training courses and course for continuing professional development. The largest organisations which are specifically for TCM therapists (who aren't members of other professions such as physiotherapy, etc.) are the Association for Traditional Chinese Medicine (ATCM), the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), and the Register of Traditional Chinese Medicine (RCHM). The RCHM is focused specifically practitioners of Chinese herbal medicine and has been active in the pursuit of statutory regulation of Chinese herbal medicine for many years.

Banned Substances

Substances which are not available for sale within the UK, such as minerals and substances of animal origin, are available for sale since they are legal in Holland. However, it is the practitioner's responsibility to adhere to the The Human Medicines Regulations 2012 and also those of their governing body when ordering.

trade restrictions

Plants and animals, which are subject to species protection may be imported and exported only with a CITES certificate (evidence that the product comes from cultivation / breeding).
